Emergency Scenarios and Responses

To report an emergency or suspicious activity

  • Police and Fire Departments: 9-9-1-1 (from a campus phone) or 9-1-1
  • LLS Security: x1121 (from a campus phone) or 213-736-1121

FIRE

If you discover a fire:

  • Close the door as you evacuate to contain the fire.
  • Activate the nearest fire alarm pull station.
  • Call 9-1-1.
  • Call Security x1121

If you hear/see the fire alarm:

  • DO NOT assume the alarm is false.
  • DO NOT use the elevators.
  • Feel the door with the back of your hand.
  • If warm:
    • DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR.
    • Wedge a wet towel or cloth item at the base of the door and on air vents.
    • If you must have air, open the window.
    • Call 9-1-1.
    • If necessary, waive a piece of cloth out the window to get help.
  • If normal temperature:
    • Open the door slowly.
    • Leave and close the door.
    • Stay close to the ground if there is smoke.
    • Evacuate using the nearest emergency exit and convene at the safe refuge area.

EARTHQUAKE

  • DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON to protect your head and neck.
  • Stay away from windows and hanging objects.
  • Assess the area, and evacuate only if necessary (e.g. significant structural damage or a subsequent emergency).

POWER OUTAGE

  • Remain indoors.
  • Call Security, x1121or (213) 736-1121.Report the power outage, security will call DWP.
  • Use caution when exiting buildings.

ACTIVE SHOOTER

  • Remain calm and employ “Run, Hide or Fight” tactics.
  • Close and lock all windows and doors, and create obstacles to block entry.
  • Turn off lights, silence cell phones, and eliminate all noise.
  • Crouch down, spread out, and shield yourself.
  • Call 9-1-1.

HELP OTHERS

  • When safe to do so, always help those who need assistance.
